Research paper exploring disciplinary problems and corporal punishment and flogging mandated by court-martial among the 2nd South Carolina Regiment during the American Revolution. Based upon a study of Francis Marion's order book, 1775 - 1777. Supporting data Includes graphs charting numbers of offenses for drunkenness, neglect of duty, and being absent without leave. Essay concludes with two regimental registers in which names marked with an asterisk designate soldiers who were lashed: "List of soldiers belonging to the 2nd S.C. Regiment Mentioned in Marion's Order Book, 1775-1777 and Moss's Roster of S.C. Patriots in the American Revolution," in ; and "List of Men Court-martialed and Mentioned in Marion's Order Book 1775-1777 but not noted in Moss as belonging to the 2nd Regiment.."

A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
